WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

Experience Different on the Gold Coast

Mention the Gold Coast and so much comes to mind – world-famous surfing beaches, trendy cafes, stunning national parks, a vibrant arts and culture scene. There is so much to explore, eat, drink and see.

Here’s a list of things to do on the Gold Coast that are all a little outside of the box.

Become a Barista

The Gold Coast has an amazing café culture and is evolving into a premier destination for great coffee. So why not go beyond and get a taste of the action yourself?

The Gold Coast Coffee School aims to produce the most highly skilled baristas with their specially developed programs. At the school you learn how to roast the beans, make the perfect espresso shot, clean and care for your coffee machine as well as learn about the latest industry trends. The courses are hands on and targeted to give you the knowledge needed to make a cup of coffee that tastes just right.

The Gold Coast Coffee School is located at 21 Davenport Street, Southport QLD 4215.

Become a Sculptor

We’ve all perhaps thought of trying our hand at something artistic. But if drawing or painting doesn’t appeal you may find that manipulating clay or other mediums into works of art does. The Sculptor’s Society Gold Coast offers classes as well as membership to the society for those who share the joy of sculpting.

The aim of the society is to promote a wider interest in sculpting. It is open to professionals, hobbyists and absolute beginners.

If you simply want to try your hand at creating something then a class may well be a great escape from the daily grind. Ruth Della is the president of The Society and says that there are plenty of opportunities on offer.

Classes are held at Old Benowa Schoolhouse, Corner Ashmore Road & Carrara Street, Benowa and at Mudgeeraba Art Village, Mudgeeraba Road, opposite Milky Way, Mudgeeraba.

“Drive” at the most advanced race simulation centres in Australia

Racecentre operates the most advanced race simulation centre in Australia. The state of the art, custom made simulators can transport you to a world famous track, where you can race your car of choice.

It’s not a real racing car experience, but it comes close to. At Racecentre you can experience amazing augmented reality of race car driving.

Featuring ergonomic seating, triple surround screens, surround sound and even real world variables such as fuel usage, the experience is second to none.

Racecentre is located at Strike Bowling Bar, Circle on Cavill, 9 Ferny Avenue, Surfers Paradise.

Learn to Cook

In our fast-paced life cooking can sometimes take a back seat. We have forgotten the joy of preparing a meal from fresh ingredients. So how better to refresh our love for cooking then with a lesson given by a qualified chef all in a stunning Gold Coast hinterland setting?

Tamborine Mountain Cooking school is run by Terri Taylor, a professional French trained chef who wants to share her passion for delicious food and good produce.

“Most of the produce I use comes from the organic vegetable farms on the mountain, I have endless supplies of rhubarb, avocados and greens. Quail, duck and hens eggs come from the free range farms, and meat comes from across South East Queensland. Honey, dairy and cheese is from a farmland that we own.”

Of course being on Tamborine Mountain, it’s not just about the cooking. It’s a fabulous day out. Once the lesson is complete you will be able to enjoy what you’ve cooked amid the acres of beautiful gardens on the stunning property.

Tamborine Mountain Cooking School is located at 609 Main Western Road, Tamborine Mountain.

Become a Pilot

Become a pilot

The Gold Coast is home to a world class training facility where you can train to become a pilot.

Located at the Coolangatta Airport, Air Gold Coast offers lessons given by qualified flying instructors so you can achieve your private or commercial license. You may want a lesson as something to tick off your bucket list or learn to fly for the freedom and thrill it gives.

You can take an introductory trial lesson so you can assess whether taking to the skies really is for you. This Trial Introductory Flight is one of the best ways to feel the excitement and enjoyment of flying, whether for recreation or career. The flight commences with a briefing, then during the flight you will have an opportunity to fly the aircraft under the guidance and instruction of our qualified flying instructor.

Alternatively, if piloting is not for you, the company can customise a scenic flight tour for you.

Air Gold Coast and Professional Jet Aviation are located at the Gold Coast airport, 34 Eastern Avenue, Bilinga.

Fly like a Superhero

HydroFly is the ultimate watersport. Fly through the air, hover above the waves and master stunts taught by talented instructors who have competed at World Championship level.

Director Peter Hendra thinks HydroFly offer something very unique.

“Our instructors provide the process and teach you the skills required to master your experience; you control your height, speed, and tricks all from your feet,” he says.

While it may seem daunting Peter says that it’s not that hard to master. First timers may take up to ten minutes to get out of the water and up flying but plenty of people pick it up instantly.

“There is nothing better than seeing our customers with the biggest smile after they have successfully learned to Flyboard, Hoverboard or Jetpack,” he says.

Safety is paramount and there is an in-depth briefing before you start. The instructors are all fully trained and will even teach you how to fall safely. You must be over 12 years of age to fly and there is a 120 kilogram weight restriction.

HydroFly is located at Waterways Drive, Main Beach.
